Why we rebranded and why you should care

Okay, so we didn’t rebrand completely, but we got the lovely Jena Marie to refresh our branding. Want to know why?

The background

Sunday Best Digital Agency officially launched in March 2022, so why did our branding need a refresh? Well, I made a few mistakes when I was launching SBDA. Here are some of them

  1. Hired a graphic designer, not a brand designer

  2. Didn’t use the brand strategy to inform the brand identity

  3. Focused too much on what I liked, not what would appeal to my target clients

All of this led to a brand identity that wasn’t suitable and had to be updated less than a year later.

Here’s how I knew it needed a redesign.

  1. I was embarrassed to show it off

  2. I didn’t know how to use it in social media posts, so it was very disjointed and not consistent

  3. I kept changing it

  4. I didn’t feel like it represented what SBDA was about

So I ran to Jena and she whipped up something fabulous that truly elevated our brand.

When I revealed this new brand identity, we had a few comments like “Oh, but I loved your old branding!”.

That’s all well and good, but just because someone loves it doesn’t mean it’s right for the business. Plus, a brand identity needs to be strategic.

And Jena nailed it!

The branding feels elevated but accessible and is so far from the typical half-arsed branding many SEO agencies have.

And that was important to me.

Why branding matters so much to this SEO agency

SEO and branding seem like they’re at completely opposite ends of the marketing spectrum. But I’m trying to change that.

Because SEO has long ignored the importance of brand for too long.

I would see businesses with amazing visual brand identities and great brand voices disrupted by obviously-for-SEO copy and unsuitable SEO tactics.

This might lead to good SEO results, but these results don’t last. Because while SEO is great at directing new traffic to your site, if you’re not giving a good first impression, customers won’t return.

We decided to invest more in our branding because we know how powerful branding and SEO can be when both have been done properly.

And we wanted to show our clients that we care about their brand just as much as their SEO.

Why branding should matter to you

“They ruined our website”.

“The copy doesn’t read well and doesn’t sound like us”.

Whenever I hear about a lead who has had a bad experience with an SEO agency, I always look at the agency’s website.

And 9 times out of 10, they have terrible branding or a poorly-designed website.

So why does this matter?

Well, if an agency doesn't care about their own brand, how can you expect them to care about yours?

They’re not going to give a flying ferret about your website design if all they want to do is stick another 500 words on it to hit an arbitrary word count.

They’re not going to care about injecting personality into your blog posts because they want to pump out the content and get paid.

As long as they can show that your rankings and traffic are increasing, they won’t care about whether their results are long-term and sustainable.

So, when choosing an agency, be wary of those that have not invested in good branding.

They might do your business more harm than good.
